An intruder with a backpack was arrested on the south grounds of the White House late Friday after scaling a perimeter fence, according to a statement from the Secret Service.

The suspect, identified by Washington, D.C., police as Jonathan Tran, 26, of Milpitas, Calif., was being charged with unlawful entry.

President Trump, who was in the residence at the time but was not at risk, told reporters Saturday that the intruder was a “troubled person.”

The president said the Secret Service did a “fantastic job” in nabbing the intruder.

The Secret Service said the incident occurred about 11:38 p.m. when the intruder scaled an outer perimeter fence by the Treasury Building and East Executive Avenue.

The suspect was carrying a backpack, which was screened and “found to be free of any hazardous materials,” the Secret Service statement said.

The man, who was arrested by officers of the Secret Service Uniformed Division without further incident, has no criminal history nor any previous history with the U.S. Secret Service, according to a federal law enforcement official.

CNN, which initially reported the incident, said the intruder was discovered when officers “bumped into” the individual near the South Entry of the executive mansion. CNN’s Jeff Zeleny reported that the suspect, who had not been detected until that encounter, told the officers: “No, I
