Cerbo lifts ASU baseball over Long Beach State

Arizona State baseball (8-7) overcame another firstinnin­g deficit Saturday to win 9-4 over Long Beach State, clinching a series victory at Phoenix Municipal Stadium. Zach Cerbo’s two-run homer to left field was the key hit in a three-run second then Cerbo drove in another run in the fourth with a two-out laser to center.

» On Friday, Ryan Lillard scored on a throwing error in the bottom of the 10th as ASU baseball (7-7) completed a late rally with a 7-6 victory over Long Beach State.

ASU softball scores 10 runs in 2nd to blow out Nebraska

Arizona State softball erupted for 10 runs in the second inning, punctuated by a Ulufa Leilua three-run homer, and the Sun Devils (18-5) cruised to a 10-1 win over visiting Nebraska on Saturday.

» On Friday, ASU jumped ahead quickly with a five-run first inning and the Sun Devils (17-5) cruised to a 12-1 win over Nebraska. Sashel Palacios and Ulufa Leilua each had four RBIs to lead ASU.

Cruz’s HR helps Dominicans beat US 7-5 in WBC

Nelson Cruz hit a goahead, three-run homer off Andrew Miller in the eighth inning, Starling Marte added a solo shot off the All-Star reliever and the defending champion Dominican Republic overcame a five-run deficit to beat the United States 7-5 Saturday night.

The comeback delighted a clamorous crowd of 37,446, the largest for baseball in the five-year history of Marlins Sunday, failed to reach the three previous WBC finals.

The Dominicans improved to 10-0 in the past two Classics, including 2-0 this year. They can clinch first place in Pool C and advance to the second round by beating Colombia on Sunday.

Logano pulls away from Larson, wins Vegas Xfinity race

Joey Logano pulled away from Kyle Larson on a restart with four laps left and held on to win the NASCAR Xfinity race Saturday.

Logano chose the outside lane on the last restart and moved in front of Larson out of the fourth turn at Las Vegas Motor Speedway for his first Xfinity victory since October at Charlotte.

Daniel Suarez put Cup regulars in the top three spots. Justin Allgaier was fourth, followed by Austin Dillon and Darrell Wallace Jr.

NASCAR cup regulars Kyle Busch and Brad Keselowski won the first two stages of the 200-lap race.

Elliott Sadler finished 10th and retained the points lead.

Rattlers rout Crush for first IFL victory

Darrell Monroe rushed for 93 yards, quarterbac­k Darron Thomas threw three touchdowns and the Rattlers (1-2) rolled to their first win in the Indoor Football League, burying the Colorado Crush 71-27 on Saturday at Talking Stick Resort Arena.

Mastery easily wins San Felipe, pulls up after finish

Mastery won the $400,000 San Felipe Stakes by 6 3/4 Mastery led all the way and ran 1 1/16 miles in 1:42.28 at Santa Anita on Saturday. The 4-5 favorite paid $3.60, $2.40 and $2.10.

Smith says shortly after crossing the finish of the Grade 2 race, Mastery picked up his left hind leg and wouldn’t put any weight on it.

The colt’s saddle was removed and he was vanned off for a trip back to his barn. Baffert says he’s not sure exactly what’s wrong.

Mastery was making his 3-year-old debut after winning all three of his starts last year.

Eastern invader Shaman Ghost wins Santa Anita Handicap

Shaman Ghost beat Midnight Storm by three-quarters of a length to win the $750,000 Santa Anita Handicap. Ridden by Javier Castellano, Shaman Ghost ran 1 1/4 miles in 2:01.57 and paid $4.60, $2.60 and $2.40 as the 6-5 favorite on Saturday.

Owner Frank Stronach was on hand to see his 5year-old horse win a big race at Santa Anita, which Stronach also owns.

Midnight Storm returned $3 and $2.80, while Follow Me Crev was third and paid $5 to show.

V. Williams saves 3 match points, wins at Indian Wells

Venus Williams cast aside Saturday at the BNP Paribas Open.

Williams moved into the third round at Indian Wells for the first time since 2001, the year she and her father were jeered after she withdrew from her semifinal against younger sister Serena because of an injury. Williams boycotted the hard-court tournament until returning last year.

Earlier Saturday, Madison Keys played — and won — her first match of 2017 after time off because of a wrist operation, beating Mariana Duque-Marino 6-1, 7-5. Keys, a 22-year-old American ranked No. 9, had arthroscop­ic surgery on her left wrist shortly after the seasonendi­ng WTA Finals in October.

In men’s action Saturday, No. 7 seed Jo-Wilfried Tsonga lost to Fabio Fognini 7-6 (4), 3-6, 6-4 in 2 1/2 hours, while 38-year-old, 6-foot-11 Ivo Karlovic, who was seeded 19th, bowed out to 21-yearold, 5-foot-7 Yoshihito Nishioka 6-4, 6-3.

John Isner hit 23 aces, had zero double-faults and never faced a break point while edging Mikhail Kukushkin 7-6 (0), 7-6 (6).

Wade Marrs leads out of the halfway point of Alaska’s Iditarod Trail Sled Dog Race.

The 26-year-old veteran musher left Huslia at 7:05 p.m. Friday with 14 dogs.
