Fend off Devils in wild final period

- SARAH MCLELLAN

A four-goal head start wasn't enough to hold off the Devils as the Coyotes needed a late third-period goal to eke out a 5-4 win over the Devils on Saturday at Gila River Arena.

Defenseman Anthony DeAngelo wired a shot from the high slot with 6:29 to go, a goal that stood as an crucial insurance tally before morphing into the game-winner once Devils defenseman John Moore lifted a backhander over goalie Mike Smith at 15:02. The Devils continued to push and had a missed penalty shot by winger Taylor Hall, a photo finish that seemed unlikely when the Coyotes cruised to a 4-0 advantage early in the second.

Winger Radim Vrbata scored his team-leading 16th goal just 1:27 into the first period when he buried a feed from winger Max Domi by Devils goalie Cory Schneider.
