March Madness sports book wagers exceed Super Bowl

Even bigger than the Super Bowl when considered as a single event, the March Madness college basketball tournament dominates the action in Las Vegas through the rest of March.

While most of the big tournamentviewing parties took place last weekend, every sports book will be jammed for the tournament’s later-round games. Look for game-time food and drink specials at South Point, the Palms, Palace Station, El Cortez, Orleans and Gold Coast, among others.

An estimated $300 million was wagered in Nevada’s legal sports books in the first week of the tournament, surpassing the $138 million total bet on this year’s Super Bowl.

5-cent line: If you want to bet, the South Point casino is a good place to do it. The sports book there is dealing a 5-cent line for the remainder of the NCAA tournament, meaning that you have to bet $105 to win $100, as opposed to the standard $110/$100. The nickel line is for straight bets on sides only; no totals.

Big Squeeze: The road-construction project dubbed the Big Squeeze is underway. Part of the huge Project Neon plan, the Big Squeeze is another Spaghetti Bowl interruption that will affect southbound traffic near downtown on U.S. 95 to Reno. The work on a new flyover is expected to last until early 2018.

More NASCAR: A second yearly NASCAR event is coming to Las Vegas. The event will be in the fall beginning in 2018. It will be one of the final 10 races of the season, making it part of The Chase for the Cup.
