DPS: Wrong-way driver hits 2 cars

-

A silver SUV drove the wrong way on the westbound lanes of Loop 202 in Tempe early Sunday morning, resulting in collisions that closed down parts of the freeway and Loop 101 for hours, according to the Department of Public Safety.

The driver, who officials identified as 19-year-old Jahine Gregg, was booked into jail on charges of aggravated DUI and multiple counts of endangerment and criminal damage.

Around 1:45 a.m., DPS officers received reports of a car traveling east in the westbound lanes of Loop 202 around Center Parkway. It hit one car at Center Parkway and another car at McClintock Drive, the DPS said. Five people sustained non-life-threatening injuries in the crashes and were treated at the scene, the DPS said.

Gregg was taken to HonorHealth Scottsdale Osborn Medical Center, where he was treated for minor injuries, the DPS said.

Lanes on the westbound Loop 202 and the northbound and southbound ramps of Loop 101 were closed, but they reopened around 6:45 a.m., according to the DPS.

Parties in homicide are identified

Phoenix police have identified the suspect and victim of an homicide Saturday near Thomas Road and 67th Avenue.

Police arrested Heriberto CelayaLeyva, 23, on Sunday in the shooting of 20-year-old Kevin Gomez Avizca, according to police spokeswoman Sgt. Mercedes Fortune. Police had learned that Celaya-Leyva and Avizca were in a verbal argument that turned physical, Fortune said, and Celaya-Leyva pointed a handgun at Avizca and shot him.

Police originally responded to a call reporting the argument and gunfire in the area around 3:20 a.m. Saturday. Avizca was later pronounced dead inside an apartment.

Police were still investigating.
