Elliott holds off Sauter at Martinsvil­le for his 2nd NASCAR trucks victory

MARTINSVIL­LE, Va. - Chase Elliott grabbed the lead when Christophe­r Bell wiggled with 17 laps to go and held off teammate Johnny Sauter to win the NASCAR truck race at Martinsvil­le Speedway on Saturday.

Elliott, who lost out to Sauter on the 0.526-mile oval last October, held off one challenge from the defending series champion and pulled away for his second victory in 12 career starts in the series. Sauter finished second, followed by Bell, rookie Noah Gragson and Ty Dillon.

Elliott, who is ineligible to collect points in the truck series as a full-time Monster Energy NASCAR Cup Series competitor, led at the end of the 70-lap first stage, and Sauter led at the end of the second, earning him valuable regular-season points and a valuable playoff point.

Michigan women outlast Georgia Tech in 3 overtimes to capture WNIT title

DETROIT - Katelynn Flaherty hit four 3-pointers and scored 27 points, Hallie Thome added 25 points, and Michigan outlasted Georgia Tech 89-79 in three overtimes on Saturday for the WNIT championsh­ip.

Michigan (28-9) is the 20th different champion in the 20-year history of the tournament.

Siera Thompson added 13 points with eight assists for Michigan, which outscored Georgia Tech 13-3 in the third overtime. Flaherty became the second player in program history to reach 2,000 points.

Zaire O’Neil scored 21 points and grabbed nine rebounds for Georgia Tech (22-15) but she fouled out with 3:36 left in regulation. Elo Edeferioka added 11 points and 17 rebounds.

Brit Johanna Konta beats Wozniacki in Miami Open final

KEY BISCAYNE, Fla. - Johanna Konta won the biggest title of her career when she beat Caroline Wozniacki 6-4, 6-3 on Saturday in the final of the Miami Open.

The No. 10-seeded Konta, the first British woman to reach a Key Biscayne final, was the more aggressive player from the start and finished with 33 winners, compared with eight for the 12th-seeded Wozniacki.

Konta showed her versatilit­y on the final point, drawing Wozniacki to the net with a drop shot and then floating a lob off the back of the baseline for the clinching winner.

She improved to 19-3 this year. Her other titles came at Sydney this year and Stanford in 2016.

The 25-year-old Konta received $1.18 million and will climb to a career-high No. 7 next week.

ASU baseball edges UCLA as Lin homers, Lane collects 3 hits

Lyle Lin had two RBIs, including a home run, to help ASU baseball (12-13) to a 5-4 win over UCLA on Saturday night at Phoenix Municipal Stadium. Taylor Lane added three hits for the Sun Devils, who close out the series at 12:30 p.m. on Sunday.

Oregon pulls away to beat Arizona State in a Pac-12 softball game

Giselle Juarez allowed seven runs on 10 hits to take the loss as Oregon pulled away for an 8-4 win over ASU softball (23-11) on Saturday in Eugene, Ore.

Cheng wins her first Symetra Tour tourney at the Gateway Classic in Mesa

Liv Cheng made a par on the second playoff hole to win her first career Symetra Tour event on Saturday at the Gateway Classic at Longbow Golf Club in Mesa. Cheng made a 17-foot par putt on the 17th hole and a par on 18 to get into the clubhouse with the lead at 7-under, just ahead of Anne-Catherine Tanguay, who closed at 6-under.

Mina Harigae, who was the co-leader entering the day, made a 10-foot par putt on the 18th to force the playoff. After two pars on the first playoff hole, Harigae’s second shot went into the hazard on the second playoff hole and that opened the door for Cheng, who was able to drop an 8-footer for par to claim the victory.
