Scarlett Johansson is only 32,and compiling a top 5list of her greatest work is difficult – not because the pickings are slim, but because they’re so bounteous. Johansson has grown up since her 1994 film debut in “North” to become one of Hollywood’s pre-eminent sex symbols and action-film vixens. But her skills go so much deeper than skin, giving her the flexibilit­y as an actress to make a list like this possible at such a young age. So, from her superhero turn in “The Avengers” to a disorienti­ng art-house performanc­e in “Under the Skin,” here are our 5 favorite Johansson performanc­es – so far.

5. ‘Match Point’ (2005)

In her first of several collaborat­ions with Woody Allen,Johansson makes the most of her bombshell qualities as the smoldering Nola Rice, a poor American girl trying to hack it as an actress in London, where she becomes the object of obsession for social climbing former tennis pro Chris Wilton (Jonathan Rhys Meyers). All well and good, if he didn’t happen to be married to her ex-fiance’s sister, and unwilling to part with his new-found wealth. A sophistica­ted thriller, it’s a more cynical, European slant on Theodore Dreiser’s “An American Tragedy” and Johansson provides all the dreary film’s fire. Long before she broke the box office as Black Widow, a young Johansson rocked the indie side of the comic-book spectrum in this charming adaptation of Daniel Clowes’ graphic novel about a pair of best friends tentativel­y wading into adulthood down different paths — and away from each other.
