message specifically targeted to eastern European nations formerly under Soviet and Russian influence.

Trump and Stoltenberg said they also spoke about the joint U.S.-NATO operation in Afghanistan, efforts to combat the Islamic State in Iraq and Syria, and Russia’s 2014 annexation of Crimea from Ukraine.

But first, NATO must deal with internal tensions over the costsharing for the collective defense. A 2014 agreement reached at the NATO summit in Wales requires every NATO ally to “aim to move toward” spending 2% of their economic output on defense by 2024.

Trump has often misrepresented that agreement, claiming that it was retroactive and that NATO allies owe money directly to the United States.

“Many nations owe vast sums of money from past years, and it is very unfair to the United States. These nations must pay what they owe,” Trump told Merkel last month.

He followed that up with a tweeted claim that Germany “owes vast sums” to NATO and that “the United States must be paid more.”

Police have charged a 37-yearold man in connection with the murder of Cook County Associate Judge Raymond Myles.

The suspect was identified by police as Joshua Smith.

Myles, who presided over criminal cases, was fatally shot and his 52-year-old girlfriend was seriously wounded early Monday morning outside the judge’s home on Chicago’s South Side.

The judge’s girlfriend was shot in the leg and is expected to survive. Myles, 66, suffered multiple gunshot wounds to his body and was transported to a nearby hospital where he was pronounced dead.

MELANIA TRUMP WINS DAMAGES FROM ‘DAILY MAIL’

The Daily Mail, a breathless British tabloid, published an apology to first lady Melania Trump on Wednesday and agreed to pay unspecified damages and costs to settle two lawsuits for publishing an article alleging “racy” rumors about her years as a single model in New York.

“We apologize to Mrs.Trump for any distress that our publication caused her,” the Mail said.

At issue was an article carried by the Daily Mail and Mail Online in August 2016 under the headline: “Racy photos and troubling questions about his wife’s past that could derail Trump.”
