Rattlers host Spokane with 1st place on the line

The Indoor Football League season hits the halfway point on Saturday when the Rattlers (4-3) host the Spokane Empire (5-2) at 6 p.m., at Talking Stick Resort Arena. First place in the Intense Conference at is stake. The game is being televised by FSAZ Plus.

Larson starts on pole with Bristol qualifying rained out

BRISTOL, Tenn. - Kyle Larson will start on the pole on points because rain washed out qualifying at Bristol Motor Speedway.

Larson won at Fontana from the pole in the No. 42 Chevrolet and started first a week later at Martinsvil­le. He has five top-two finishes in just seven NASCAR races this season.

Chase Elliott joins Larson on the front row of Sunday’s race. Martin Truex Jr., Brad Keselowski and Joey Logano round out the top five.

The Cup series returns after its first off week of the season.

NASCAR scrapped qualifying Friday because of the rain that hit that track and could be a problem all weekend. The field is set by owner points.

Finau, Cauley tied for lead at Texas Open

SAN ANTONIO - Tony Finau arrived at the 18th tee with a chance at a course record, but his approach splashed in the water and his bogey dropped him into a second-round tie for the lead with Bud Cauley at the Valero Texas Open on Friday.

A birdie at the par-5 final hole would have given Finau a share of the course record, but he settled for a 7-under 65 and is tied with Cauley at 8 under through 36 holes at TPC San Antonio.

Ian Poulter, Europe’s Ryder Cup star, missed the cut and lost his fully exempt status on the PGA Tour. He fell about $30,000 short of the required earnings to keep his status through a medical exemption because of a foot injury last year.

Madison Bumgarner lands on DL after dirt bike accident

DENVER - Giants ace left-hander Madison Bumgarner was placed on the disabled list for the first time in his big league career Friday after a dirt bike accident that sent him to a hospital with bruised ribs and a sprained joint in his pitching shoulder.

San Francisco announced Bumgarner’s injury Friday, a day after the accident occurred during an off day in Colorado. The Giants said Bumgarner is out of the hospital and resting at the team hotel. He is scheduled to be reevaluate­d next week.

Rangers release Josh Hamilton after another knee injury

ARLINGTON, Texas - The Texas Rangers have released Josh Hamilton from his minor league contract after another knee injury, perhaps signaling the end of the 2010 AL MVP’s career.

Team spokesman John Blake said Friday that Hamilton injured his right knee while recovering from left knee surgery and will have a procedure on the newly injured knee at some point.

Arizona State baseball turned a poor start around Friday night for a 12-6 non-conference series-opening win over Cal State-Bakersfiel­d at Phoenix Municipal Stadium. ASU (17-19) trailed 5-2 in the third but batted around in the bottom of inning, scoring four runs to take a 6-5 lead, and the Sun Devils cruised from there.
