Canning lifts ASU baseball over Cal State Bakersfiel­d

Gage Canning slammed a two-run homer off the roof of the batting cage beyond the right field wall Saturday night in ASU baseball’s 4-2 win over Cal State Bakersfiel­d.

ASU (18-19) clinched the non-conference series ahead of Sunday’s 12:30 p.m. finale. The Sun Devils have won six of their last seven games.

ASU softball comes up short against Utah

Utah scored four runs in the seventh inning, and a Sun Devils rally in the bottom of the inning fell just short as ASU softball (27-13) lost 7-6 on Saturday in Tempe. Current Team Penske drivers have won five of the seven IndyCar races at Barber Motorsport­s Park and claimed the pole seven times in eight years.

Siniakova, Vandeweghe win; Czechs tie U.S. in Fed Cup semis

WESLEY CHAPEL, Fla. Katerina Siniakova beat Shelby Rogers in straight sets to bring the defending champion Czech Republic even with the United States at 1-1 in the Fed Cup semifinals.

CoCo Vandeweghe defeated Marketa Vondrousov­a 6-1, 6-4 in the first match Saturday, giving the U.S. an early 1-0 lead in the best-of-five series. Vandeweghe, who is ranked No. 24, raced to a one-set lead against the 19-year-old Vondrousov­a in 27 minutes en route to her seventh straight Fed Cup win.

In the second match, Siniakova outlasted Rogers 6-3, 6-3. Siniakova, who is ranked 38th, converted all five break points.
