Senators beat Bruins 3-2 in OT, advance in playoffs

-

BOSTON - Clarke MacArthur scored a powerplay goal 6:30 into overtime and the Ottawa Senators beat the Boston Bruins 3-2 on Sunday to win their first-round playoff series in six games.

Craig Anderson stopped 28 shots for Ottawa, which advanced in the postseason for the first time since 2013. The Senators will play the New York Rangers in the second round.

Tuukka Rask made 26 saves for the Bruins, and Boston got goals from Drew Stafford and Patrice Bergeron.

Bobby Ryan and Kyle Turris scored for Ottawa five minutes apart in the second to give the Senators a 2-1 lead. But Bergeron tied it early in the third to force overtime for the fourth time in the series. It was also the 17th overtime game of the playoffs, tying the NHL record for an opening round set in 2013.

Six minutes in, Bruins forward David Pastrnak was sent off for pulling MacArthur down from behind as he entered the Boston zone. MacArthur, who had missed 156 straight regular-season games after sustaining a concussion on Oct. 14, 2015, ended it 36 seconds later.

Capitals 2, Maple Leafs 1, OT: Marcus Johansson stuffed his second goal of the game past Frederik Andersen at 6:31 of overtime, lifting Washington to a series-winning victory over the Toronto Maple Leafs in Game 6 on Sunday night.

Johansson pulled Washington even at 1-1 with less than eight minutes to go in the third period after Auston Matthews broke a scoreless tie with his fourth goal of the series for Toronto. It was the fifth overtime game of the series, and the record-setting 18th in the first round of the playoffs.

Holtby made 37 saves for the Presidents’ Trophy-winning Capitals, who will face the Pittsburgh Penguins in the Eastern Conference semifinals for the second straight year.

Andersen was sharp with 34 saves.

Oilers 3, at Sharks 1: Leon Draisaitl and Anton Slepyshev scored on breakaways in the opening minutes of the second period and the Edmonton Oilers advanced to the second round of the playoffs with a victory in Game 6 over the San Jose Sharks on Saturday night.

Draisaitl and Slepyshev each buried their chances for their first career playoff goals and the Oilers held off the Sharks after that to get the win in their first playoff series since getting to the Stanley Cup Final in 2006. Connor McDavid iced the game with an empty-net goal with less than a second to play for his first even-strength point of the series.
