Storytellers to talk about ‘growing up’ experiences
We’ve all heard the colloquial phrases, “You need to grow up,” “It’s time to be an adult,” You’re a big girl/boy now” — even if you’re only 18 years old — but what does all this mean? Is age the indicator of maturity, or do we view growing up as an intellectual phenomena?
One thing most can agree upon is that growing up is not without its embarrassing, heartbreaking and funny moments. The Arizona Storytellers Project has invited seven of your neighbors to tell a first-person narrative in front of a live audience for the show “Growing Up.”
Megan Finnerty, founder of the project, and Dianna Náñez, storytelling coach, will co-host the evening at the Arizona Heritage Center at Papago Park in Tempe.
You will hear stories about relationships, grief, empowerment, resilience and transformation.
Tiara Vian, a recent storyteller, will share a story about adulting and how her expectations of married life changed over time.
“There were times that I thought I was the only one going through certain trials. But I now know things I’ve learned and the experiences I’ve had are shared experiences. And that’s why I’m grateful for this thing we call ‘adulting.’ ”
Reyna Montoya’s story touches on a similar principle of shared experiences and how empowering they can be for herself and others.
“It’s important to me to shamy story of transforming all the fear into action, where I was able to be empowered and inspire others. We can always find areas where we can grow, and I constantly feel I’m growing up all the time,” Montoya said.
