Naked woman who led police on chase gets 27-month term

- JESSICA SUERTH

A naked woman who stole a Maricopa County Sheriff’s Office pickup truck and led police on a 70-mile chase through metro Phoenix has been sentenced to 27 months in prison.

Lisa Luna, 31, pleaded guilty in April to theft of means of transportation and endangerment. In handing down the sentence Thursday, Maricopa County Superior Court Judge John Rea said Luna will get credit for the 119 days she has spent in jail since her arrest in January. Rea also sentenced her to three years of supervised probation upon her release.

Prosecutor Scott Blum pointed to Luna’s “lengthy history” with mental illness and drug addiction while addressing Rea, adding that the Maricopa County sheriff expressed his sympathy toward her and agreed with the plea deal.

Rea cited Luna’s battle with mental illness and drug addiction, even removing any restitution order, during his acceptance of the plea.

Luna declined to make a statement during the sentencing hearing.

On Jan. 5, Maricopa County sheriff’s Deputy Francisco Campillo was called to the Shell gas station off Butterfield Trail in Gila Bend and witnessed a naked Luna walking down the street.

Luna told Campillo that she had been sexually assaulted, a claim she later recanted, and was acting erratically.

Campillo left his pickup truck running and, while he walked toward the gas station to get something to cover her, Luna got into the truck and started driving away.
