ASU women’s golf leads after first round of Lubbock Regional

The Arizona State women’s golf team battled windy conditions to lead through one round of the NCAA Division I regionals in Lubbock, Texas, on Monday.

The Sun Devils sit at 5 over as a team — one stroke ahead of Oregon — with senior Monica Vaughn in a three-way tie for fourth at 1 under, three strokes off the lead. Three of the top four teams are from the Pac-12.

Proposed Raiders stadium would be finished by June 2020

LAS VEGAS - A preliminar­y timeline for the proposed stadium that would be home to the Raiders in Las Vegas shows constructi­on would be finished only three months before the 2020 regular season begins.

The draft of the timeline made public Monday by the Las Vegas Stadium Authority shows constructi­on on the proposed 65,000-seat stadium would begin in January and last 30 months, giving the team three months to move in.

Members of the board overseeing the $1.9 billion project are expected to discuss the preliminar­y timeline during their regularly scheduled meeting Thursday. The Raiders did not immediatel­y respond to a request for comment from The Associated Press.

The NFL’s newest stadium took two-and-a-half years to complete. The first Minnesota Vikings preseason game at the venue took place in August.

Russia, Canada remain unbeaten at ice hockey worlds

COLOGNE, Germany - Russia and two-time champion Canada remained unbeaten after convincing wins over Germany and Belarus at the ice hockey world championsh­ip on Monday. Vadim Shipachyov and Nikita Kucherov scored twice each as record-title winner Russia defeated Germany 6-3 in Cologne, while Nathan MacKinnon notched two more goals and an assist as Canada shut out Belarus 6-0 in Paris, where goaltender Calvin Pickard was outstandin­g.

Also in Group B, the Czech Republic came back from a three-goal deficit to beat Finland 4-3 in a shootout.

The United States came back three times to beat Sweden 4-3.

Player-of-the-game Johnny Gaudreau scored twice, J.T. Compher scored the winner, and Jimmy Howard stopped 39 shots as the Americans clocked their second win following their surprise defeat to co-host Germany on Friday.

Pirates pitcher Taillon has suspected testicular cancer

PITTSBURGH - Pittsburgh Pirates pitcher Jameson Taillon underwent surgery Monday morning for suspected testicular cancer.

The right-hander had the surgery at Allegheny General Hospital.

The recommende­d treatment plan for Taillon is pending further testing. Taillon remains on the 10-day disabled list.

Braves release former MVP Ryan Howard from minor league deal

ATLANTA - The Braves have released former National League MVP Ryan Howard from his minor league contract after he struggled at Triple-A Gwinnett. Atlanta signed Howard, a longtime star with the Philadelph­ia Phillies, shortly after the season began. He went to extended spring training in Florida before joining the G-Braves a couple of weeks ago. He lasted only 11 games. Howard was released Monday after hitting .184 with one homer and five RBIs. — Wire services

UA: The No. 18 Wildcats (31-15, 12-12) swept Washington last weekend to move up one spot in the USA TODAY coaches top 25. They won 5-4, 3-1 and 12-11 over the Huskies, bouncing back from being swept at Stanford. 1B JJ Matijevic is hitting .406 with nine home runs and 52 RBIs, followed by DH Alfonso Rivas at .380 and OF Jared Oliva at .351.
