POLICE: ATTACKER ON TRAIN RANTED ABOUT MUSLIMS

A man who police say fatally stabbed two people who tried to stop him from yelling anti-Islamic slurs on a Portland light-rail train spent time in prison for robbery and kidnapping charges years ago, court records show.

Jeremy Joseph Christian, 35, was being held on suspicion of aggravated murder, attempted murder, intimidati­on and being a felon in possession of a weapon.

Two people died Friday night and another was hurt in the stabbing after police say Christian yelled racial slurs at two young women, one of whom was wearing a Muslim head covering.

POLICE OFFICER FATALLY SHOT; SUSPECT ARRESTED

A man fatally shot a Virginia State Police special agent in a Richmond public housing project before fleeing on foot, sparking an overnight manhunt that ended with his arrest Saturday, authoritie­s said.

Travis Ball, 27, is charged in the Friday shooting of Special Agent Michael T. Walter, who died early Saturday, authoritie­s said. Walter was an 18-year veteran of Virginia State Police and former member of the Marine Corps, State Police Superinten­dent Col. Steven Flaherty said.

COMPANY BLOCKED FROM DRILLING FOR GAS PIPELINE

A federal agency has told a company building a high-pressure natural gas pipeline it cannot resume drilling beneath creeks in southeast Ohio and northern West Virginia.

The Columbus Dispatch reported the Federal Energy Regulatory Commission on Thursday rejected Texas-based Energy Transfers’ request to resume horizontal drilling.

BRITAIN LOWERS THREAT LEVEL, MAKES MORE ARRESTS

Britain reduced its terrorism threat level a notch, from “critical” to “severe,” as authoritie­s said they had made major progress in unraveling the plot behind the Manchester concert bombing. Police made two more arrests in Manchester on Saturday on suspicion of terrorism offenses, bringing the number of suspects in custody to 11, and said more arrests were expected.
