Triple-digit temperatures out in full force this week
But brief reprieve is expected Thursday
Phoenix is expecting a few days of triple-digit temperatures as the summer months set in.
High temperatures will be between 100 and 103 degrees through Wednesday after hitting 100 at 2:40 p.m. Sunday, according to the National Weather Service.
Temperatures are expected to drop slightly below triple digits on Thursday but should rise back up to 101 on Saturday, according to the Weather Service’s detailed forecast.
“We go through modulation between high-pressure and low-pressure patterns,” said Ken Waters, a Weather Service meteorologist. “When the high builds in, the temperatures climb.”
The record high for May 28 in Phoenix was in 1984, at 113 degrees. The record low was in 1929, at 53 degrees, according to the Weather Service.
The record high in May for the Phoenix area is 114 degrees. That record was set in 1910, according to the Weather Service. But the average high temperature that people should expect to see in May is 92.6 degrees.
The Weather Service says the average temperature throughout the days in May is 87.4 degrees, while in June, the average temperature jumps up to 95.8.
Risk of heat exhaustion and heatstroke are increased when temperatures climb.
Residents should be proactive in staying hydrated if they plan to do any outdoor activities when the temperature rises.
