Castroneve­s leads Penske march at Road America

ELKHART LAKE, Wis. - Team Penske will have a strangleho­ld on the first two rows of the IndyCar race at Road America.

Helio Castroneve­s won the pole at qualifying on Saturday, turning in a lap time of 1:41.30. It was his 50th career pole, and third of the season.

Castroneve­s beat out teammate Will Power by .06 seconds to take the pole. Power won last year’s race at the rural Wisconsin road course.

Two more Penske drivers will start in the second row after Josef Newgarden finished third and Simon Pagenaud came in fourth. Penske drivers have also turned in the fast practice times all weekend.

Ogwumike, Sparks spoil Fever’s Catchings night 84-73.

INDIANAPOL­IS - Nneka Ogwumike scored 21 points and the Los Angeles Sparks had a 19-0 run in the third quarter in an 84-73 victory over the Indiana Fever on Saturday night, putting a damper on Tamika Catchings’ jersey retirement.

After the Fever raised Catchings’ No. 24 to the rafters at Bankers Life Fieldhouse at halftime, Los Angeles stretched a 46-40 lead to 25 points by scoring 19 straight points.

Harrison wins 100 hurdles at nationals, US sweep talk starts

SACRAMENTO, Calif. - The Olympic 100meter hurdles gold medalist didn’t race. The bronze medalist couldn’t make the team.

Still, they’re thinking a red, white and blue sweep in the event at the London world championsh­ips. Just shows the depth of the hurdles.

World-record holder Keni Harrison used a strong start to win her first U.S. outdoor track and field championsh­ip Saturday. Nia Ali, the silver medalist at the Rio de Janeiro Games, was second and Christina Manning took third. Because Harrison already had a wild-card berth into worlds in August, 2008 Olympic gold medalist Dawn Harper-Nelson also made the hurdles squad courtesy of her fourth-place finish.

Spithill skippers Oracle to 1st win in America’s Cup

HAMILTON, Bermuda - Jimmy Spithill skippered Oracle Team USA to its first victory in the 35th America’s Cup on Saturday, taking a thriller in Race 6 on the Great Sound to slow Emirates Team New Zealand’s momentum.

Oracle Team USA, owned by software tycoon Larry Ellison, won by 11 seconds, the closest margin in the first-to-seven match, to cut the Kiwis’ lead to 4-1.
