CAMPING OUT

-

Camp confidential: Maybe some of the Cardinals’ players were lethargic at Monday morning’s practice, but coach Bruce Arians and his staff weren’t. It was clear from the beginning of practice they were going to coach hard. The practice was closed to the public, so the language used on the field was more coarse than an open workout in the stadium. Some assistant coaches were more vocal than usual. Defensive coordinator James Bettcher, for instance, got in the faces of some young players early in practice for what he deemed less than full effort…The hour that was open to the media featured more hitting and tackling than a normal training camp practice, but Arians isn’t being stupid about it.

Quarterbacks are off limits, of course, and established players such as receiver Larry Fitzgerald and David Johnson, aren’t tackled to the ground. That’s not the case for players such as running backs Elijhaa Penny and Kerwynn Williams. They were fair game in some periods of Monday’s practice. Afterward, Williams said he likes to experience full tackling in practice because it better prepares him for the season.

Injury report: ILB Karlos Dansby (knee) was not present at the open portion of practice. S Ironhead Gallon (knee) returned to practice. OLB Jarvis Jones (quad), CB Elie Bouka (ankle) practiced on a limited basis. WR John Brown (quad), CB Justin Bethel (knee), WR Aaron

Dobson (hamstring), defensive tackle Ed Stinson (knee) remained out. Arians is hopeful Bethel, a starter, will be able to practice on Monday.

Quote: “Like coach said, sometimes fatigue makes a coward out of you. Not saying we have any cowards on this football team, but I just want to make sure guys are dialed in and ready to go for tomorrow (Tuesday).” --Cornerback Patrick Peterson

Up next: Practice Tuesday morning is closed to the public. The team leaves Wednesday for the preseason game on Thursday against the Cowboys in Canton, Ohio. The next practice open to the public is Aug. 8 at University of Phoenix Stadium.
