Stanley Kubrick’s adaptation deviates wildly from King’s novel, in which writer and recovering alcoholic Jack Torrance (Jack Nicholson) signs on to be the offseason caretaker of the massive, isolated (and haunted) Overlook Hotel during a grueling winter with his wife and child in tow. As a portrait of encroaching madness, it’s a little wanting (Nicholson is always cranked up to 11, so it’s kind of hard to tell the difference when he starts going crackers). But there have been few more brilliant cameramen than Kubrick, and the atmosphere of unease he creates in the hotel’s labyrinthine space is unequaled.

“The Dead Zone” (1983)

(and breaks hearts) when he wakes to find his fiancee has moved on, married and started a family. But it’s the nuclear ambitions and threat of WWIII he finds when he peeks into the future of politician and would-be president Greg Stillson (Martin Sheen) that really unnerve him. It sounds cheesy on paper, but it’s chilling in execution, and you can’t take your eyes off a shattered Walken.

“The Shawshank Redemption” (1994)

When you think King, you’re more likely to think of disemboweling than heartstring tugging, but “Shawshank” is a bonafide three-hankie film. There was little about King’s novella “Rita Hayworth and Shawshank Redemption” that suggested the makings of a movie that would become an all-time film classic and the highest-rated movie on the IMDB top 250. Credit Tim Robbins and Morgan Freeman – the former playing a man wrongly imprisoned for his wife’s murder, the latter a wise and wizened old-timer – for grounding King’s prison drama with so much heart. Clark County, Nev. Tiesto’s latest effort is 2014’s “A Town Called Paradise.”
