CAMPING OUT

- – Kent Somers

Camp confidential: The Cardinals are not beating up on each other daily in practice, but this is a more physical training camp than last year. Two examples were provided on Tuesday. In one drill, running backs and centers worked on picking up blitzes. Three defenders lined up, with two of them rushing. Sometimes they came up the middle, the “A” gaps, and sometimes one came from outside. The running back and center had to work together to pick up the blitzers. “Our center and backs are so tied together,” coach Bruce Arians said. “And we see so much of that double-A gap blitz with guys coming off the edge. It’s more practicing assignments as much as techniques. It’s the hardest thing they have to do.” Next to that group, tight ends worked on blocking outside linebackers. The top two tight ends, Jermaine Gresham and Troy Niklas, held up well. And backup Ifeanyi Momah was decent. Hakeem Valles struggled at times . ... QB Carson Palmer had a regularly scheduled practice off . ... The Cardinals worked out a punter, Brock Miller, on Wednesday and reached an injury settlement with inside linebacker Gabe Martin. On Tuesday, Arians expressed displeasure with punters Matt Wile and Richie Leone. Both have been inconsistent, said Arians, who promised to address the position if problems continued.

Injury report: CB Rudy Ford (hamstring) won’t play Saturday against the Raiders. LT D.J. Humphries (hamstring) and WR Chad Williams (shin splints) didn’t practice Wednesday and are questionable for the game. WR John Brown (quadriceps) was limited Wednesday.

Quote: “We had some guys get 50 snaps last week, and that will wear you out quick by about Thanksgiving, if you’re a younger player.” – Coach Bruce Arians.

Up next: Practice Thursday is 2-4:30 p.m. at University of Phoenix Stadium. It’s open to the public. Practice on Friday is closed to the public.
