Arizona mine inspector arrested after fight

Kingman police suspect Hart of domestic violence

- MATTHEW LIVELY

Arizona mine inspector Joe Hart was arrested and accused of domestic violence after a fight with his nephew.

Kingman police were alerted on Thursday to a fight that had turned physical. The fight took place between the 73year-old Hart and his 59-year-old nephew Kenneth Tooman, officials said.

According to the police report, the fight began after Tooman attempted to fix a water pipe on the property he rents from Hart. The police report states that Hart began the physical fight after a shouting match between the two. Hart reported he pushed Tooman, while Tooman reported that Hart attempted to punch him.

Tooman then punched Hart a few times in the face before the fight moved to the front porch of the property, according to the report. Hart began throwing metal objects onto the lawn in what he told police was a “fit of rage.”

The incident ended after Tooman punched Hart a few more times in the face and then left.

Hart was the only one arrested; according to the report, the investigation determined he had started the fight. He was arrested on suspicion of domestic violence by disorderly conduct.

The Arizona Republic reached out to Hart on Monday morning but he did not immediately return calls seeking comment.

Hart, a Republican, was elected as the Arizona mine inspector in 2006 and has filed to run for re-election in 2018.
