Speed limits are reduced by 10 mph on northbound Interstate 17 between New River and Sunset Point over the Labor Day weekend in a safety campaign. At the same time, construction projects are suspended on state highways.

Reduced speed limits will be in place on interstates over the Labor Day weekend, but construction projects will be suspended to help keep traffic moving, the Arizona Department of Transportation said.

Additional equipment and resources will be in place along heavily traveled highways over the weekend to help with quicker responses if an accident occurs on a highway in order to get traffic moving more quickly, ADOT said in a news release.

Speed limits were reduced by 10 mph on northbound Interstate 17 between New River and Sunset Point Rest on Friday in an effort to reduce accidents and subsequent delays, ADOT said.

The same speed-limit reduction will be placed along the same stretch of 1-17 in the southbound lanes on Monday.

Temporary electronic signs will advise drivers of the reduced speed limits.

ADOT and the Department of Public Safety will stage equipment, such as loaders and utility trucks, in three hightraffic zones along I-17, Interstate 10 and State Route 87, all heavily traveled roads on holiday weekends.

Travelers should be aware that while ADOT has not scheduled any closures during the holiday weekend, there will be existing work zones.

Unexpected delays can happen due to crashes, heavy holiday traffic and stalled vehicles. If this occurs, ADOT advises drivers to:

» Pack extra drinking water and snacks.

» Avoid the busiest travel times, if possible. » Get plenty of rest before driving. » Check vehicles, including tire pressure, belts and fluid levels.
