Lofts at Westgate:

- CATHERINE REAGOR

Construction begins on 76 loft-style apartments next to Gila River Arena in Glendale’s Westgate Entertainment District. The apartments will be on the third and fourth floors of a building that is home to food and drink establishments.

Glendale’s Westgate Entertainment District will soon be a place to work, play and live.

Westgate developer iStar has started construction on 76 loft-style apartments in a building next to Gila River Arena, near Coyotes and Sunrise boulevards.

The apartments will be located on the third and fourth floors of a building that is home to Bar Louie, Kabuki Japanese Restaurant and Tavern + Bowl.

The Westgate lofts will be the first new apartments to go up in Glendale in nearly a decade. The lack of apartments has caused rents to jump in the West Valley suburb.

In April, Glendale led the nation for the biggest spike in rents — 11.5 percent, according to real-estate research firm Abodo.

“The Lofts at Westgate are an exciting evolution of Westgate,” said David Sotolov, executive vice president for iStar. “Residents will have the ability to walk out their front door and have direct access to more than 20 restaurants and bars, a 20-screen AMC Theatre, 250 days of events, professional sporting events, world-class concerts and free live music.”

Westgate’s apartments are on track to open in January. The developer hasn’t set rents yet.
