From a new look behind the bench to a significant roster makeover, the Coyotes have been in near constant flux since the offseason started.

But what hasn’t changed is the opportunity for prospects to latch on with the team.

The audition process begins Thursday when the Coyotes open rookie camp, which will include a tournament in San Jose against youngsters from other NHL teams.

“You look across the league now, quite a few teams are doing it,” General Manager John Chayka said. “Logic is we can get our players some structure but for the most part allow them to show what they’ve done over the summer and show us whether they’re ready to make our team or be a part of the American League or earn a contract. The only way to really judge that is to get them to play games.”

The tournament begins Saturday with the Coyotes facing the Ducks. They’ll also play the Avalanche (Monday) and Sharks (Tuesday).

Before departing for California, Arizona’s rookies will practice Thursday at Gila River Arena and Friday at the Ice Den in Scottsdale with the practices free and open to the public. Thursday’s session starts at 1 p.m. for Group A and 2:30 p.m. for Group B. Friday’s practice begins at 9:30 a.m.

Among this year’s participants are former firstround draft picks Dylan Strome and Clayton Keller, this summer’s firstround pick Pierre-Olivier Joseph and winger Christian Fischer.
