Let’s create Amazon, Ariz., and reap all the tax benefits

-

Regarding Amazon’s quest for a $5 billion second North American headquarters:

Why not donate the land, and allow it to be called Amazon, Arizona?

With 50,000 potential employees working there, it actually becomes a city.

There is a lot of space to accommodate Amazon’s needs south of the Valley and above Casa Grande. Give them the land, name it The City of Amazon and look at the tax benefits to the state.

Thinking outside the box provides a better chance of getting the facility here instead of throwing money at tax breaks, which everyone else will do.

And, make this a marketing issue and not a political proposal.

Let’s make it happen!

Great editorial on the people working to secure our water

Thursday’s Arizona Republic editorial was excellent as it described the accomplishments of the people who have done so much to ensure that Arizona has ample water supplies for the future.

However, I would add that residents of Arizona, specifically the Valley and surrounding area, have even more responsibility in saving water.

How many times do we pass houses and businesses that are overwatering their grass with the excess running down streets and gutters?

Where is the responsibility of developers to use desert or xeriscape landscaping to conserve water? These are as important as our leaders finding more sources of water and for our children and grandchildren who decide to live in Arizona. — Patricia Abraham, Mesa

There are many ways to benefit from hunting buffalo at Canyon

The announced hunt for buffalo in the Grand Canyon could have a more positive impact if the following were enacted:

» Charge for the permits, $1,000 each, that could go to help the Arizona Game and Fish Department budget.

» Set up a meat processor for the excess meat not taken by the hunters. Grind into ground meat, freeze and offer to food banks in Arizona.

» Sell the hides to tanners for leather. Again the funds received could help offset the Game and Fish budget.

Seems simple, but there are probably regulations prohibiting the application of these suggestions that would have to be waived. — Tom Oteri, Tempe

Let’s do provide the balance on young people who are ‘Dreamers’

I agree with the writer who would like a balanced article about DACA people who commit crimes, since apparently The Republic article about those who are upstanding productive citizens doesn’t show the whole story.

Since the DACA incarceration rate is 0.98 percent according to the CATO Institute (Immigration Research and Policy Brief No. 3), such an article should be fair enough to portray 100 upstanding DACA immigrants and one criminal.

We need to do something about distracted drivers on freeways

I was having lunch recently with an insurance agent for one of the top national carriers. She said alarmingly that over 60 percent of their claims are not due to the drunk or wrongway drivers, but rather from “distracted drivers.”

These drivers include women who apply makeup and men shaving while driving, nit-wits who try to read while driving, people using their cellphones handsfree or otherwise while driving.

And let us not forget the biggest culprit today, DWT — driving while texting. Is our Legislature too blind to see the damage and death this is causing and still not wanting to pass a solid and enforceable law preventing such activity?

Where on Earth are the continuous patrols by our illustrious DPS troopers? Isn’t it time the governor allocated serious money to expand the freeway police force and not just use them on occasion to announce some silly three-day enforcement crackdown.

There needs to be more continuous freeway enforcement and serious laws passed that will tone down reckless driving and its human carnage. — Bruce G. Levitta, Phoenix

Your intense hatred for the president is growing tedious

Benson has stepped to a new low. Over the years, I have often defended his take on politics and even had some great laughs at his humor. But today I’m thinking what happened to “not guilty until proven guilty”?

His picture of President Trump and his son-in-law in shackles is ridiculous! Nothing has proven their guilt and neither has the investigation come to that conclusion.

No wonder President Trump tweets. He needs to protect himself from the hate spewed at him.

Get over it, people, he is our president until the next election. This is getting old! — Joyce June, Scottsdale
