Smithsonia­n magazine is hosting Museum Day Live! Sept. 23, offering free entry to more than 1,000 museums, cultural spaces and zoos across the U.S.

What you need to know

You must register online first. Enter your name, email address, and the place you want to visit. Register at smithsonia­nmag.com/museumday/museum-day-live -2017/.

Print your ticket to be safe. Some museums or zoos allow you to show your ticket on your smartphone or tablet, but others will require a printed ticket.

This ticket provides general admission to the ticket holder and one guest. Other family members will have to pay full admission.

You can download one ticket per email address.

Here’s a list of participat­ing museums in the Phoenix area. Hours listed are for Sept. 23.

Arizona Capitol Museum

Learn about the cultural, political and social history of Arizona through handson activities, artifacts and exhibits.

Rosson House Museum at Heritage Square

The Rosson House is Phoenix’s famous Queen Anne-style Victorian-era home. Tourgoers can explore the restored house and get a taste of what life in Phoenix was like during the early 1900s.

Pueblo Grande Museum

This museum, which opened in 1929, focuses on the archaeolog­ical and cultural history of Arizona, specializi­ng in the history and life of the Hohokam people who called the Valley home from A.D. 450 to 1450.

Halle Heart Children’s Museum

The American Heart Associatio­n’s facility teaches kids about cardiovasc­ular health, eating well, being active and saying no to tobacco through fun programs and exhibits.

Desert Botanical Garden

Guests can discover the wondrous variety of desert flora through walking trails and exhibits. The DBG also incorporat­es temporary art installati­ons in concert with the plants and wildlife. Details: 7 a.m.-8 p.m. 1201 N. Galvin Parkway, Phoenix. 480-941-1225, dbg.org.

ASU Art Museum

Located on the Tempe campus of ASU, the Nelson Fine Arts Center facility features three floors of rotating exhibits. The museum has been praised for its commitment to showcasing modern art in Arizona.

Scottsdale Museum of Contempora­ry Art

SMoCA puts a spotlight on contempora­ry art, architectu­re and design. The museum also hosts film screenings, family-friendly events and lectures.

i.d.e.a. Museum

The letters in the name stand for “imaginatio­n,” “design,” “experience” and “art.” Science, engineerin­g and art combine in hands-on activities to teach children in fun ways.

Arizona Museum of Natural History

Guests can learn about the natural, topographi­c and cultural history of the landscape of the Southwest. Don’t miss Dinosaur Mountain and the Paleo Dig Pit.
