Owings could serve as pinch-runner

- SCOTT BORDOW

Chris Owings’ fractured right middle finger likely isn’t progressing fast enough for him to be an option to take atbats in a wild-card game. But could Owings make a difference as a pinch-runner?

“For me, it’s very intriguing,” Lovullo said.

Owings said he would be open to helping however he can.

“From my standpoint, I’ve been working out, running bases, so that’s a conversation they’ll have to have and then have with me and see if it’s something they’d like to do. I’m feeling good.”

Owing said he’s aiming to see game action on Oct. 2 during an instructional league game at Salt River Fields.

“I can test it out there and see how I feel,” he said. “I think I’d be fine running and sliding. I’d probably be a little more cautious, maybe have a pad or something on there. There are definitely things we do to make it comfortable.”

Three years ago, the Kansas City Royals carried speedster Terrance Gore on their roster solely so he would be available to run off the bench, and Gore wound up playing a key role in a win over the Oakland A’s.

Owings isn’t at Gore’s level in terms of pure speed, but he is an excellent basestealer. Owings has been successful on 59 of 68 steal attempts in his career, an 86.8 percent success rate.

“I’ve asked everybody to start writing some notes down and that’s one of the ones I have in there,” Lovullo said. “Will he be available to pinch run, late in the season or perhaps the next level? We haven’t quite had those discussions, but it’s something I’ve been thinking about because he is one of our best baserunners. If we have him, we need to take advantage of that.”

It's PRP for Delgado

Reliever Randall Delgado, on the disabled list since July with elbow inflammation, will receive a platelet rich plasma injection on Thursday.

“It’s a decision we feel will get him on the field as quickly as possible, as healthy as possible and the performing at the level he wants to,” Lovullo said.

Lovullo said it’s too early to determine a timetable for Delgado’s return.
