Smith, Phoebe Allen

-

Phoebe Allen Smith passed away, at age 94, at the Class Act Assisted Living Home in Mesa, Arizona. She was born in McCornick, Utah on October 22, 1922, and passed away at midnight September 24, 2017. She had lived in the home (617 South MacDonald, Mesa Az) that she and Laurance had built when they were married in 1942, until she entered assisted living 7 years ago. After her mother, May Hubbard Allen, died giving birth to twins, her father, Andrew Bailey Allen, moved her 3 year old brother (Alec H. Allen) and her (at 4 years old) to Chandler, Arizona. Phoebe attended Chandler High School and met Laurance Smith, whom she called “Smitty.” He called her “Butch.” When they started “courting,” Laurance would ride his rickety old bike from Mesa (where he lived) to Chandler to see Phoebe. They would walk a mile into town to see a movie and walk the mile back home. Laurance would then ride his bike 7 miles back home to Mesa. They were married June 6, 1942 and later sealed in the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints Mesa, Arizona Temple. When she graduated from Chandler High School, she worked for several years at the Chandler Spreckels Sugar Company. She then became a homemaker and a care taker to many, many friends, neighbors and family. She cared for others, from all walks of life, with much love, patience, and kindness. She and Laurance loved cats and dogs and nursed many stray animals back to good health. Phoebe was very active in the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints. She served as a Sunday School Teacher for many years. She enjoyed going with her Bishop Limblom to Salt Lake City, Utah for General Conferences. Phoebe and Laurance had 3 baby boys .... none of them lived. The 3rd boy died in the womb, and when the doctors took the baby, they dislocated her hip, and she had hip pain the remainder of her life. She had spent her entire life serving others until she had a stroke 7 years ago. She stayed at Class Act until her passing. She is survived by her Brothers, Alec H. Allen and Andrew Bailey Allen as well as numerous nieces and nephews.
