Vikings: No new injury for Bradford, just wear, tear

-

EDEN PRAIRIE, Minn. - Another MRI on Minnesota Vikings quarterback Sam Bradford’s left knee has revealed no additional injury, after he was pulled early from the game at Chicago because of continued discomfort.

Vikings head athletic trainer Eric Sugarman said Tuesday that Bradford does not have any ligament damage or bone bruising, just aggravation of the wear and tear in the joint that has hampered him for the past four weeks.

It’s a common condition for someone whose knee has undergone two ACL reconstructions.

NFL may change policy that players ‘should’ stand for anthem: NFL owners will meet next week to consider changes to a game manual that says players “should” stand during the national anthem, a guideline that the league has left to the discretion of players who kneeled in larger numbers after criticism from President Donald Trump.

Commissioner Roger Goodell told club executives Tuesday in a memo obtained by The Associated Press that the anthem issue is dividing the league from its fans. He said the NFL needs “to move past this controversy.”

NFL spokesman Joe Lockhart said the policy will be “front and center on the agenda” when owners meet in New York next Tuesday and Wednesday.

The movement started by former San Francisco quarterback Colin Kaepernick last season had mostly subsided when Trump told a rally in Alabama last month that owners should get rid of players who kneel during the anthem.

Giants’ Odell Beckham Jr. has surgery for broken left ankle: Three-time Pro Bowl receiver Odell Beckham Jr. has had surgery for a broken left ankle.

The Giants announced Tuesday that Beckham had the surgery on Monday night in New York.

Beckham was hurt Sunday in the fourth quarter of a loss to the Los Angeles Chargers. The team said Monday that the surgery was planned for later in the week. It didn’t explain the schedule change.

More surgery is expected on fellow wide receivers Brandon Marshall (ankle) and Dwayne Harris (broken foot) later Tuesday.

Marshall and Harris were injured Sunday in a game in which four Giants’ receivers were hurt.

Sterling Shepard is day to day with an ankle injury.

Suspended Gordon details drug use, hopes for NFL comeback: Revealing he was scared for his life amid another drug relapse, suspended Browns wide receiver Josh Gordon is making his case to be reinstated by the NFL.

Gordon detailed years of substance use, the depths of his addiction and his determination to turn his life around during a 13-minute video released Tuesday on the website Uninterrupted.

The former All-Pro who led the league in yards receiving in 2013 was indefinitely suspended by Commissioner Roger Goodell two years ago following another violation of the league’s substance-abuse policy.

He’s had numerous stints in rehab, —most of which he said he didn’t take seriously. The 26-year-old Gordon can re-apply to the league this fall.

An NFL spokesman said the league had no comment on Gordon’s status.

49ers sign CB Leon Hall, place CB Asa Jackson on IR: The San Francisco 49ers have signed cornerback Leon Hall to a one-year deal.

The 49ers placed cornerback Asa Jackson on injured reserve Tuesday with a hamstring injury to make room for Hall on the roster.

San Francisco was short-handed at cornerback with Jackson and Ahkello Witherspoon (concussion) both hurt and starter Rashard Robinson leaving last week’s game twice with cramps.

The 32-year-old Hall was originally a first-round pick by Cincinnati in 2007. Hall played 121 games in nine seasons with the Bengals, recording 26 interceptions and being named a second-team All-Pro in 2009.
