Which seat does McSally really want?

- Laurie Roberts Columnist Arizona Republic USA TODAY NETWORK

It seems clear that Martha McSally is running for the Senate.

The only question is, which Senate seat is she seeking?

McSally began cozying up to President Donald Trump in early November, shortly after Sen. Jeff Flake announced he wouldn’t be running for re-election.

She’s always been a reliable vote for Trump but she never endorsed him and distanced herself from the president early on in some of her public remarks.

“That’s just not how leaders carry themselves,” she once said of Trump’s comments about Latinos, women, veterans and others.

In the first 10 months of the year, McSally mentioned Trump a grand total of one time on Twitter. Then came Flake’s announcement, and suddenly, she’s got nothing but love for Trump, an obvious bid to court the party base. In November, she tweeted out props to the prez at least six times, including one with a photo of herself with Trump and another with Ivanka Trump.

In December, she’s tweeted about Trump another six times, including Monday when she lauded him for his “bold, proactive strategy to keep America safe.”

Me? I’m wondering about her strategy.

On Nov. 7 — two weeks after Flake’s announcement that he won’t run for re-election — McSally told her congressional colleagues that she’s running for the Senate in 2018.

She just hasn’t bothered to mention it to Arizona voters.

Meanwhile, another Republican, Lea Marquez-Peterson, has announced that she’s running for McSally’s southern Arizona congressional seat. But mum’s the word from McSally.

Now, with increasing concerns about John McCain’s health, it appears (to me, at least) that McSally may be hedging her bets — hoping to get the easy track into the Senate via gubernatorial appointment rather than the hard slog through Democrat Kyrsten Sinema, who is running for the seat being vacated by Flake.

That should not happen.

For one thing, if you’re running, you should run for the seat that’s open. To be angling for McCain’s seat would be unseemly and just a step or two on the class scale above Kelli Ward, who was in full vulture flight in July, openly angling for the job within 48 hours of McCain’s cancer diagnosis.

For another, if McSally isn’t running for Flake’s seat, then what mainstream Republican is running for the job? Or are Republicans content to nominate Ward and turn over the seat to Democrats for the first time in more than two decades?

If McSally wants to be a U.S. senator — and it’s clear that she does — it’s time to quit hedging her bets and announce that she’s running.

For the seat that is open.
