A viral social-media threat targets an unspecified high school.

A viral social-media threat against an unspecified high school with the initials “SHS” caused a stir among communities and school districts across the country Wednesday night, including Mesa.

The Mesa Unified School District sent an email and voice-message blast to families at Skyline High School and Superstition High School Wednesday night, saying police had checked into a social-media post and determined it was not a valid threat.

“We are aware of a social media post by an individual identified as Ray Andres targeting a school referred to as SHS,” the message said. “Mesa Police have investigated and all indications are this post originated out of state. Please know student and staff safety is our top priority and we look forward to a full day of teaching and learning tomorrow.”

A threat against “SHS” and “Ray Andres” was a hot topic in communities around the country on Facebook Wednesday night, where schools with the initials “SHS” also reacted to the post.

Others said the “Ray Andres” threat post is a hoax that has surfaced periodically on social media.

In New Mexico, a Shiprock High School Facebook page reported the threat was reviewed and it was determined there was no threat.
