Today’s question:

In today’s dollars, how much it would cost to have had a first-class ticket on the Titanic?

I don’t know what has got into you people, but you seem to have a lot of time on your hands lately.

A first-class parlor suite on the Titanic cost $4,350 or about $100,000 in today’s money. Third-class cabins went for from $15 to $40 or from $350 to $900 in today’s money.

Could you please explain the history of the term “nor’easter” for the recent storms? Is it because it is happening in the Northeast, or maybe the wind is coming from the northeast?

According to the National Weather Service, a nor’easter is a storm along the East Coast and is so called because the winds over the coastal area are typically from the northeast. They seem to be most common and most severe between September and April.

When a highly paid athlete is injured and cannot finish the season, who pays the salary?

The contracts vary between the major professional sports, but in general athletes continue to get paid while injured.

In the National Football League, the usual rule is they get paid injury pay which is less than their full pay, but is still substantial. A player will get paid for the current season, but if they are unable to play due to an injury the team can terminate the contract the next year.

What is the origin of the word “lukewarm?”

The experts don’t know for sure, but it is possible the “luke” part comes from the Middle Dutch or Old Frisian word “leuk,” which meant tepid or weak.

When a person arrives, you offer him a greeting, such as “hello.”

When the person leaves, you offer him an un-greeting, such as “good-bye.” What is the real word for “un-greeting?”

Farewell, send-off, leave-taking.
