Former Arizona Gov. Jan Brewer is backing U.S. Rep. Martha McSally in Arizona’s Republican U.S. Senate primary.

In an interview Tuesday with The Arizona Republic,

Brewer, a 2016 campaign surrogate for now-President Donald Trump, described McSally of Tucson as a hard worker whose message should resonate with all brands of Republican voters.

Asked if she hoped to deliver Trump voters to McSally, Brewer said, “I would hope so. A lot of Trump supporters, they have gotten behind Martha McSally. She’s got a broad spectrum of supporters ... I think they will consider her, I truly believe that.”

Brewer, who served as Arizona’s governor from 2009 until 2015 and signed into law one of the nation’s strictest immigration enforcement laws, said Republicans must nominate a strong candidate who can take a fight to Democratic front-runner U.S. Rep. Kyrsten Sinema of Phoenix. Sinema is expected to face attorney and community activist Deedra Abboud and newcomer Shawn Redd, among others, in the Democratic primary.

“People know who I am and they know what I stand for,” Brewer said. “They know that I always do what I believe is right and I hope that they trust me with my endorsement of Martha McSally. We need a strong candidate coming out of the primary and she’s the gal that can get it done.”

As a surrogate for Trump during his 2016 presidential campaign, Brewer warmed up throngs of his supporters during Trump’s many visits to Arizona. Brewer said Trump’s tough stance on immigration played a critical role in her decision to support him.

Brewer’s endorsement, still sought after by GOP candidates, could bring McSally more credibility to a portion of the Republican electorate, especially during the Aug. 28 primary election.
