whole team wanted to roll,” shortstop Hailey Tanori said. “We most definitely felt the momentum.”

Yaseli Mariscal singled, as well, and she and Martinez each stole a base on a wild pitch with Arrington at the plate. Arrington walked to load the bases for Tanori, who singled into right field, breaking the tie.

From there, Sahuarita made it through their entire lineup, sending player after player around to score, mainly on a string of singles.

“That was just very fortunate that they found the grass, and give our girls credit, they had good quality at-bats and put the ball in play,” Fanning said. “We weren’t crushing the ball, for sure. We found some holes, and took advantage of it.”

By the time the inning was over, Sahuarita had tallied six runs on six hits and jumped out to a 10-4 lead, the largest of the game.

That score held through the next in- ning and a half of play before Sahuarita left fielder Solymar Navarro caught the final fly ball to seal the win. Winslow finished its season 23-13. Sahuarita took its new hardware across the parking lot for one more meal as a team at the nearby Raising Cane’s. A championship run as underdogs had brought them that much closer.

“Us having all the ups and downs really made us want to click and be close with each other,” Tanori said. “We knew we had each others’ backs.” 1A - Superior 13, Bagdad 7
