SUN CITY WEST – Douglas Boyd Piper, 82, of Sun City West passed away on May 9, 2018 at Banner Del Webb Medical Center. He was born on April 8, 1936 in Scottsvill­e, KY to Bill and Eva Piper. Doug and his wife Louise have resided in Arizona since 1974 when he retired from the United States Air Force after 20 years of honorable service. He retired as a Master Sergeant. Doug served all over the world including one tour in Vietnam as a tactical fighter aircraft mechanic. Upon retirement from the Air Force, worked another 27 years as a supervisin­g inspector for several airlines and aircraft maintenanc­e companies. Doug was an excellent musician, playing acoustic guitar, bass guitar and banjo for several bluegrass and country bands. In 1974, he founded the band Traditiona­l Bluegrass and sang lead from 1974 through 2017. He was also a charter member with The Arizona Bluegrass Associatio­n which began in 1981. Doug is preceded in death by a son Gregory. He is survived by his wife of 62 years Eva “Louise” Piper; son Ronald; sisters Carol Morgan and Ruby “Tudy” Lebo; niece Dee Perry; grandchild­ren Megan, Jennifer, Julie and Devin; and 5 great-grandkids. Doug had an honest warm smile that lit up a room. He will be missed by his family, friends, picking buddies and everyone who knew him. Urnside services will be held at 10:30 AM Monday, May 21, 2018 at National Memorial Cemetery of Arizona, 23029 N. Cave Creek, Phoenix. A celebratio­n of his life will be held at a later date.
