Internet lists don’t quite capture the true Arizona

- Scott Craven

Meaningless internet lists, you really messed up this time.

We know the competition to list the most beautiful this and most unusual that is at an all-time high, with factchecking relegated to the closest intern, and only in the rare cases when fact-checking is used at all.

But that doesn’t explain how Tombstone was named the cutest town in Arizona, or Sedona the most quaint.

Let’s start with PureWow’s list of the cutest town in each state. Tomb-

stone was its choice for the Grand Canyon State.

Since when is Tombstone ‘cute’

Tombstone has a lot going for it, but its motto is not “The Town Too Cute to Die.”

To walk down unpaved Allen Street is to stroll through the 1880s, be it with a lot more souvenir stores than in Wyatt Earp’s day. Hard to imagine anyone would approach a gunslinger — whose period garb includes spurs and six-shooters — and say, “Cute get-up you’ve got there.”

And it’s highly doubtful those leaving the reenactment of the Shootout at OK Corral agreeing, “Well, that was cute show.”

Now it’s on to Mom.me’s list of the quaintest city in each state. Again, issue is taken not with any type of accolade because Sedona is worthy of many with its superlative scenery.

Too crowded for ‘quaint’

Anyone who’s been stuck in traffic along state routes 179 or 89A, the main roads in and out of Sedona, probably wouldn’t think “quaint.” Parking spots are the true spirit-refreshing vortexes on busy summer weekends.

Quaintness dissolved long ago amid the plethora of Instagram posts showing off Sedona’s stunning red rocks, photos that are likely tied to increased tourism.

And you definitely kiss “quaint” goodbye as more celebrities visit, and not just for rehab.

To reiterate, Sedona is gorgeous. But not at all quaint.

The Internet should stick to lists of what it knows best. The world’s most adorable animals, for example. And the best cat videos ever.

Just one bit of advice: some lists are so useless, it’s hard to imagine anyone caring enough to click.

That would be you, “Cost of bacon the year you were born.”
