Officers’ families should protest
With all the problems concerning the football players not standing for the National Anthem, I think it is time for all of the mothers, wives and children of all of the law enforcement officers who have been ambushed, murdered and killed in the line of duty this year to protest at football games.
Before or during the playing of the anthem, no one seems to be too concerned about them.
Why Flake no longer connects with voters
What U.S. Sen. Jeff Flake needs to understand is he has lost all curb appeal. Yes he is a lame-duck, but even some lame-ducks deserve our ear.
However, Flake lost that honor when we reelected him and he went back and did not honor his part of the deal: to represent us, we the people! He really shouldn’t consider living off the people any longer, as he has violated the trust we placed in him.
Douglas takes us back to the Scopes trial
Thirty some years ago, I attended an interactive production of “Inherit the Wind” at McCormick Railroad Park. It was a favorite movie of mine.
Never in my wildest dreams did I imagine that I would revisit the issue in 2018, relative to our current education administration. You would think that with current funding deficiencies we would prioritize more efficiently.
Stanton could be president one day
Thank you to Mayor Greg Stanton for all the work he has dedicated to Phoenix (and the Superbowl experience), especially in support of the USS Phoenix (submarine) Memorial and to helping our homeless veterans.
I think he perhaps could even one day run to be in The White House and our president.
We can control pistols and rifles
Enough already with letters telling us that any new form of commonsense gun restriction won’t prevent mass shootings because murderers won’t follow such laws. Following that logic, we should get rid of all laws against murder. Indeed, why not wipe all laws off the books since they don’t prevent all crimes?
For whatever reason, laws controlling access to bazookas, rocket-propelled grenades, mortars, artillery, land mines and the like seem to be working pretty well so far.
Maybe some laws do serve a purpose.
Science should lead us in public schools
Destroying our publicschool system is not enough for many people. Now Superintendent of Public Instruction Diane Douglas wants to make sure that those students do not get the opportunity to learn about important biological processes.
Ms. Douglas and her allies want to remove the word “evolution” from biology texts used in public schools. I suppose if you ignore the word or idea it will go away.
Natural selection, the process that drives evolution, is more than a theory. To make my point clear, every day antibiotic resistant bacteria challenge us. Bacteria develop or “evolve” this resistance through natural selection. There is no argument about this claim.
I understand many people challenge the idea that we can estimate the geologic time periods, millions of years, but the same science that has revolutionized medicine, transportation, and communication is the same science that we use to determine the age of prehistoric plants and animals.
Like sergeant Joe Friday said in the TV series “Dragnet”, “Just the facts ma’am.”
The question is: “Can humans lead a productive satisfying life without working?”
Robots and computerized machines will make it possible for our smartest to design automatic work machines. What about the 99 percent who aren’t smart enough to connect with technology in any way except as a user?
We will make enough money at the top to guarantee a living income for all, but our societal values tell us that handouts should be only for safety nets.
We may that. have to rethink
