Driver was out on bail in a shooting case

A Tolleson man arrested in a deadly collision on Interstate 17 early Saturday was out on bail in a shooting case that left his friend paralyzed in November, court records said.

Aaron Michael Larson, 25, is facing a charge of second-degree murder in the two-car collision that killed 20-year-old Desiree Sabby, according to a court document released Monday.

The crash occurred on I-17 near Northern Avenue in Phoenix at about 3 a.m. Saturday. An intoxicated Larson had stopped his Jeep in the far left lane of the freeway, the report said. Another driver swerved to avoid Larson’s car, but Sabby’s vehicle crashed into the back of Larson’s Jeep.

Sabby was extricated from the heavily damaged car before being pronounced dead at the scene.

Larson was disoriented, confused and smelled like alcohol after the crash, the statement detailed. He told

a Department of Public Safety trooper that he had been at a sports bar where he drank four beers over a three-hour period before driving.

At the time of the deadly crash, Larson was out on bail for a November 2017 incident in which is accused of shooting a friend, severing his spinal cord, court documents said. Doctors told investigators the victim would likely be paralyzed from the waist down.

A grand jury indicted Larson on two counts of aggravated assault. He was released on $10,000 bail in February. A jury trial is scheduled for August.

Larson is being held without bail for the new allegations.

A GoFundMe page for the Sabby family was launched Saturday.
