Marrero lands on DL; Sherfy recalled from Reno
The Diamondbacks placed infielder Deven Marrero on the 10-day disabled list due to inflammation in his left oblique and recalled right-hander Jimmie Sherfy prior to Saturday’s game against the Giants at Chase Field.
Marrero felt discomfort after taking batting practice on Friday, according to manager Torey Lovullo. Marrero, who played in college at Arizona State, has appeared in 49 games this year and has posted a .167 average.
Lovullo said the team had Marrero evaluated on Saturday and determined that the amount of inflammation warranted a trip to the DL. The move is retroactive to June 29.
This is the third oblique-related injury the Diamondbacks have dealt with this season. Left-hander Robbie Ray missed almost two months with a strained oblique this season, and righthander Randall Delgado is still rehabbing oblique and elbow ailments.
“It’s a time of year where these things start to pop up, and it’s not the first type of injury we’ve had like this,” Lovullo said of Marrero’s injury. “These guys go hard. They play hard and they practice hard. It’s just very, very unfortunate.”
Sherfy was with the club earlier this week but did not appear in a game before being sent to Triple-A Reno on Friday. Sherfy, 26, has a 2.01 ERA to go along with 10 saves in 20 appearances for Reno this season.
“The last time, when we sent him out the other day, it was unfortunate that we didn’t get to use him,” Lovullo said of Sherfy. “It was a very short-term look, and he knew that. We felt he would give us some coverage if needed. It never got there.”
Lovullo said the depth of his bullpen, spearheaded by the franchise-record scoreless streak being carved by rookie right-hander Yoshihisa Hirano, has allowed the Diamondbacks to give some of their young relievers time to develop in the minors.
“It’s pretty impressive,” Lovullo said of his bullpen. “It’s depth, it’s the results, it’s that these guys have been very good. It’s been the same set of characters the entire year. They’ve gotten big outs and, for the most part, stayed healthy.”
Updates on injured players
Outfielders Steven Souza Jr. and A.J. Pollock, as well as Delgado, all made rehab appearances on Friday with Reno.
In his first rehab game with the Aces, Souza went 2-for-4 in a loss to the Mariners’ Triple-A affiliate in Tacoma, Wash. Pollock went 0 for 4 and Delgado threw a scoreless inning in relief.
Lovullo said he did not get a chance to rendezvous with Pollock or Delgado but did speak with Souza on Saturday.
“I talked to Steven and he said he felt great,” Lovullo said. “He threw aggressively out to 150 feet, and he said, ‘On a line,’ and woke up this morning feeling very good. He’s going to do some more throwing again today.”
Lovullo said he is less concerned with the results of the rehab at-bats and more concerned with how the players feel the following day. He said he read positive reports from both Pollock and Delgado.
“Both players felt good,” Lovullo said of Pollock and Delgado. “It’s not necessarily the results . ... We just want them to go out and play as hard as they can for as long as they can under the guidelines they’re given.”
