Outfielder Dyson on DL with ‘lower core’ injury

- Richard Morin

The Diamondbacks placed outfielder Jarrod Dyson on the 10-day disabled list with what the club calls a “lower core injury” that Dyson suffered during Wednesday’s game against the St. Louis Cardinals.

Dyson hurt himself while positioning himself in the outfield to play a line drive struck by Cardinals hitter Tommy Pham in the seventh inning. Although Dyson had a few other precarious plays in the game, Diamondbacks manager Torey Lovullo said Dyson “felt it grab” on the Pham single.

According to Lovullo, Dyson will meet with a specialist on Friday to determine the exact significance of the injury. But for now, it sounds ominous.

Lovullo was asked if Dyson’s ailment was similar to a sports hernia injury, which is a tear of any muscle, tendon or ligament in the lower abdomen and groin area and could require surgery, according to information electronically available via the American Academy of Orthopedic Surgeons.

“I think that a sports hernia is not a phrase that is used anymore,” Lovullo said. “They now call that a lower core injury. I’m fairly comfortable saying that.

“He had a busy day yesterday. … When you’re that elite of an athlete, those are things that may impact your body. He said he felt it grab on that linedrive play.”

Dyson’s trip to the DL comes on the same day the Diamondbacks activated Steven Souza Jr. from his rehab stint and recalled right-hander Silvino Bracho from Triple-A Reno. Right-hander Joey Krehbiel was returned to Reno.

Lovullo said the team is still doing research to determine the extent of Dyson’s injury, and that Friday’s examination will help with that.

“We don’t know the extent of it,” Lovullo said. “But it’s severe enough that we need to put him on the disabled list. We’ll get more details in the coming days. We’re optimistic, as we always are, that it’s going to be as short as possible.

“We’ve got every possible scenario possible. If it’s going to be 10 days, we’re prepared for that. And if it’s going to be longer, we’re prepared for that, as well.”

A not-so-throwback

For the first time since retiring the jerseys prior to the 2016 season, the Diamondbacks donned the uniforms the club wore between 2007-15 for Thursday’s series opener against the San Diego Padres at Chase Field.

The jerseys were the first home designs the club used after switching its primary color from purple to “Sedona Red” prior to the 2007 campaign. They also feature the since-retired “db” logo on the left arm.

The only difference is a 20th anniversary patch added to the right arm, which is the case for each of the team’s throwback uniforms. The Diamondbacks have also worn multiple 1990s-era throwbacks this season.

The jerseys are similar to the team’s current standard home garments, and left-hander Andrew Chafin said he didn’t even realize the jerseys were different until closely examining them.

Delgado to be activated Friday

Right-hander Randall Delgado is expected to be added to the Diamondbacks’ active roster on Friday, Lovullo said.

Delgado’s activation comes after the end of his 30-day rehab stint, which is the longest a pitcher can play with a club’s minor-league affiliate while simultaneously being on an MLB disabled list.

The right-hander has made 15 appearances (one start) in the minors this season and has compiled a 2-1 record to go along with a 3.38 ERA in 16 innings between Reno and Class-A Visalia.
