Let’s deport lawmakers to make our streets safer

- James Calvin Brittingham, Phoenix does Joseph Drosendahl, Phoenix Anne Price, Litchfield Park Peter Baldry, Chandler

I am outraged by the news that Arizona lawmakers are immune from speeding tickets while the Legislature is in session. Foreign diplomats are also immune from arrest, but they can be deported.

I would be satisfied if we could deport speeding Arizona lawmakers to the Federal Republic of Germany, where they have no speed limits on the Autobahn.

The young people of Arizona need to rise up and cast ballots

To all the young people who were voicing their outrage this spring, just remember that protesting is great, but it doesn’t actually create change.

To actually change the direction of this country you need to vote. Now is your chance! Please vote in all local, state and federal elections, since it is elected representatives who are the ones who actually create the change in direction of this country.

So register to vote (in person or a mail-in ballot) and vote whenever an election comes up (local, state or federal). If you don’t vote you can’t complain, so vote.

Your vote count.

The All-Star baseball game does it right by honoring war heroes

I hope all were able to see the opening ceremony of the Major League Baseball All Star game.

I’ve been looking for the media comments and found none.

All military recipients of the Congressional Medal of Honor were on the field and were recognized.

The fans held their applause as asked and a combined choir from the Washington area sang our national anthem.

All stood. Thank you.

Was Trump serving himself when he nominated Brett Kavanaugh?

Those eager to see U.S. Supreme Court nominee Brett Kavanaugh confirmed should consider his views on presidential immunity.

❚ would put a president from any party above the law and the rest of the citizens of the United States.

Kavanaugh’s comments and beliefs regarding a president’s accountability to the law are concerning, especially when the current president is facing investigations into his campaign and other issues, including his charity foundation.

Given this, I wonder if the nomination wasn’t self-serving by Donald Trump. What if Clinton had appointed a similar justice during the Lewinsky scandal? Or Nixon during Watergate?

The Declaration of Independence states “all men are created equal.” Presidents should be no exception. One of our country’s founding concepts was to avoid a monarchy where a nation’s leader is above the law.

A U.S. president is equal to, not above, any other citizen and must be held to at least the same standards as the citizens they serve.

Brett Kavanaugh sitting on the Supreme Court would put this in doubt.
