Evelyn M. Faulkner

-

PHOENIX Evelyn Mae Suggs Faulkner was the second child born to Odie A. and Etha M. Suggs on November 29, 1921 in Van Buren, AR. The Suggs family moved often living in Oklahoma, California and Arizona. Evelyn attended Phoenix Union High School her freshman year and while walking home from school on the canal bank she met a cute guy named Aubrey Faulkner. The family moved again and she graduated high school in Shawnee, OK. During World War II Evelyn worked as a PBX Operator in Amarillo, TX and then in Long Beach, CA. In 1945 she and Aubrey reunited through mutual friends, married in 1946 and settled in Phoenix where they raised their three children. She retired from Union Oil Company in 1972 and she and Aubrey traveled extensively both in the United States and in the South Pacific, including a camping trip across New Zealand. She could be packed in a minute if someone mentioned going on a trip and following Aubrey’s death in 1999 she was able to travel to China, Russia, the Mediterranean and Mexico with good friends and family. Evelyn loved to play golf and played until she was 85 or so. She always caught the most fish at Big Lake during their summers in Lakeside/Pinetop and she and her girlfriends played cards weekly and ate “dinner” at 3:30 every Friday, complete with a marguerita, at the TeePee Restaurant. She was the last of the group of lifelong friends to pass. Evelyn was a woman of deep faith in God. She attended First Assembly of God until she could no longer drive herself about three years ago. She was very proud of being a “greeter” for the Maranatha Sunday School Class and loved her friends there. Evelyn is survived by her sisters Wilma Fierro, Virginia Sullivan and Carolyn (Gary) Cooper; daughters Sydney (Glen) Webb, Cheryl (Ed) Sucato and son Keith (Lorie) along with 9 grandchildren, 15 great grandchildren, 1 great-great granddaughter and many cousins, nieces and nephews. At Evelyn’s request there will be a private graveside service for the family only. Our thanks to the staff at Morningstar Assisted Living and to Angie from Hospice of the Valley for being so kind and caring to our Mom. To share memories please visit www.phoenixmortuary.com.
