CAMPING OUT

- – Bob McManaman

Camp confidential: With Sam Bradford being given a veterans’ day off on Monday by coach Steve Wilks, rookie Josh Rosen received all of the first-team reps as the Cardinals returned to practice at University of Phoenix Stadium. Rosen looked a bit inconsistent, especially early on. The passing game also mostly consisted of play-action calls, so it was difficult to gauge Rosen’s overall workout. The first-round pick out of UCLA, listed as the No. 2 quarterback on the depth chart that was released on Monday, will see his first NFL action this Saturday in Arizona’s preseason opener against the Chargers. Wilks, however, has yet to divulge how he will split playing time between the QBs. … Those also getting a veterans’ day off Monday were WR Larry Fitzgerald and LG Mike Iupati. … According to Monday’s unofficial depth chart, rookie RB Chase Edmonds has moved ahead of veteran D.J. Foster, Elijhaa Penny and T.J. Logan as the backup to starter David Johnson. Wilks was asked about Foster earlier in the day and said the former ASU product can be much more than just a receiving back. “I think he’s a back that can run between the tackles as well get outside,” Wilks said. “I don’t think he’s just a receiving back.” … Wilks recently was asked what he’s seen out of starting RT Andre Smith, whom the club signed as a free agent. The difference between now and when Smith first showed up for offseason workouts, he said, is that Smith is in far better shape than he was. “There were some concerns back in the spring, (him) getting a little overweight,” Wilks said. “I challenged him on that and he did a tremendous job coming back in and getting ready to play.”

Injury report: C A.Q. Shipley will miss the entire season after an MRI revealed he has a torn ACL in his right knee. LB Deone Bucannon (knee) is day-to-day. TE Jermaine Gresham (Achilles) and DE Markus Golden (knee) remain on the physically unable to perform list.

Quote: “My coaches in college did a great job preparing me for stuff like this and preparing me to play.” – Rookie center Mason Cole on stepping in for the injured Shipley despite only playing one full season as a starting center in college at the University of Michigan.

Up next: The Cardinals will practice outdoors Tuesday morning on the fields just south of University of Phoenix Stadium. Practice is closed to the public. The team will practice Wednesday inside the stadium from 1:30-4 p.m. Gates open 30 minutes prior to the start of practice. Practice times are subject to change.
