How to register to vote in November general election

- Dustin Gardiner

Did you miss your chance to vote in Arizona’s primary election?

Don’t fret — there’s still time to register to vote in the Nov. 6 general election, the contest that ultimately decides things.

Eligible voters have until Oct. 9 to register or update their information.

Voters who have an Arizona driver’s license or nonoperating state I.D. card can register online at servicearizona.com.

If you can’t register online, do so in person by filling out a form at the county Recorder’s Office in the county where you live. Information on office locations is available from the Arizona secretary of state’s website. Need more help? Call 1-877-THE-VOTE for assistance. Unsure if your voter registration is active and up-todate with your correct address and party preference? Visit the secretary of state’s website to verify your information.

To be eligible to vote, you must be a U.S. citizen, a resident of the county listed on your registration and be 18 years of age on or before Nov. 6.

Arizona voters must provide documentary proof of citizenship — such as a driver’s license, birth certificate or passport — to register and vote in state, county and local elections.

Voters don’t need to submit documentary proof of citizenship to vote in federal elections, though they must attest, under penalty of perjury, that they are eligible citizens.

The vast majority of Arizona voters, about 80 percent, will cast an early ballot via mail.

Voters on the Permanent Early Voting List should receive ballots around Oct. 11. Make sure you remember to sign the front of your ballot — otherwise it won’t be counted.

To get on the early voting list, you must re-register online at servicearizona.com or by filling out a new registration form at a county recorder’s office. Check the box that says “YES, I want to automatically receive an early ballot for each election for which I am eligible.”

The last day to return an early ballot by mail is Oct. 31. Ballots mailed after that date might not arrive in time for Election Day.
