Tuesday is the last day to register to vote

- Dustin Gardiner

Attention, Arizona voters: The clock is ticking.

Tuesday is the last day to register to vote in the Nov. 6 general election, the contest that decides who represents you in a plethora of public offices.

Eligible voters have until midnight on Tuesday to register or update their information.

Where to register, check your status

Voters who have an Arizona driver’s license or non-operating state ID card can register online at servicearizona.com.

If you can’t register online, register in person by filling out a form at the country recorder’s office in the county where you live. Information on office locations is on the Arizona secretary of state’s website at azsos.gov/elections.

Unsure if your voter registration is active and up to date with your correct address and party preference? Visit the secretary of state’s website to verify your information.

To be eligible to vote, you must be a U.S. citizen, reside in the county listed on your registration and be 18 years of age on or before Nov. 6.

Arizona voters must provide documentary proof of citizenship — such as a driver’s license, birth certificate or passport — to register and vote in state, county and local elections.

Voters don’t need to submit documentary proof of citizenship to vote in federal elections, though they must attest, under penalty of perjury, that they are eligible citizens.

Avoid registration scams

Voters should be wary if they are offered help registering through a thirdparty website or over the phone.

Secretary of State Michele Reagan warns first-time voters to watch out for these registration schemes because they aim to collect your private information or track internet use habits.

“Many of these sites collect an individual’s personal information to only turn around and sell it to marketing companies to generate revenue,” Reagan said in a press release this week.

“The state’s online registration system, www.servicearizona.com, is secure, efficient and personal information is never sold to commercial interests.”

Get your ballot by mail

The vast majority of Arizona voters, about 80 percent, will cast an early ballot via mail.

Voters on the Permanent Early Voting List should receive ballots around Oct. 11. Make sure you remember to sign the front of your ballot — otherwise it won’t be counted.

To get on the early voting list, you must reregister online at servicearizona.com or fill out a new registration form at a county recorder’s office. Check the box that says “YES, I want to automatically receive an early ballot for each election for which I am eligible.”

The last day to request a mail-in ballot is Oct. 26; the last day to return that ballot by mail is Oct. 31. Ballots mailed after that date might not arrive in time for Election Day.
