Check smoke detectors, other fire safety measures
Today marks the beginning of Fire Prevention Week, so it only seems appropriate to take a few minutes to review how you can help prevent fires in your apartment home.
Test your smoke detectors. Each apartment has a number of smoke detectors installed. The amount of smoke alarms you have depends on the size of your apartment. It is important to take a minute to test all of your smoke detectors to make sure they are working properly.
Be aware when you are cooking. According to the National Fire Protection Association, 41% of home fires start in the kitchen. Make sure you do not leave your food unattended. If you have young children, make sure you keep a close eye on them if they are in the kitchen with you. Make sure they stay away from hot ovens and stove tops.
Keep a fire extinguisher around. It always helps to have a fire extinguisher in the kitchen just in case. Some communities provide fire extinguishers for you, so make sure to check your apartment before you go out and buy one.
Do not leave candles burning. Having candles burning can make your home feel more tranquil and peaceful. If you do light candles, make sure there are no objects close to the flames. If you leave you apartment, make sure to blow out the flame before you go.
Have an escape plan. Make sure you and your family are familiar with how to get out of the building if there is ever an emergency. It may be a good idea to test out different routes so you know your options. Running through your escape plan with your family may help make an emergency situation a little less scary.
Preparing yourself and your family for an emergency is incredibly important, and does not take a whole lot of time. So, this week take some time to make sure your smoke detectors are working, put an emergency plan in action, and talk to your family about fire safety.
