Meghan McCain tells off leftist site over ‘clickbait’

- Rachel Leingang

Meghan McCain fought back Wednesday against a news outlet that claimed she compared the bombs targeting Democrats with Republicans getting shouted at in restaurants.

The FBI said suspicious packages containing crude pipe bombs targeting Hillary Clinton, Barack Obama, CNN and other Democrats were intercepted by the organization Tuesday night and Wednesday.

The article by Raw Story, a left-leaning website, claims McCain made the comparison on Wednesday’s episode of “The View,” where McCain is a commentator.

“Federal authorities are investigating a string of suspicious packages sent to prominent Democrats and CNN, and ‘The View’ co-host said those threats were similar to heckling faced by Republican lawmakers and Trump administration officials in public,” Raw Story wrote.

McCain called out the outlet on Twitter, saying she “did NO SUCH THING” and telling people to watch the clip.

“This is bulls--t, clickbait headlines that are contributing to the division & anger in this country. I live in NYC and work in midtown - how dare you,” McCain wrote on Twitter.

A clip of the episode posted on YouTube shows McCain did not directly compare the two.

The five members of “The View” were discussing the bombs on Wednesday’s show, which led into a broader discussion of the heated political rhetoric and divisiveness happening in the country lately.

McCain said she had a “total lifechanging experience” this year, referring to the illness and death of her father, the late U.S. Sen. John McCain, and said it reminded her of the importance of setting a good example.

“Let’s all hold ourselves to the standards that we want our country to be like. I try and do it every day, I don’t always succeed,” McCain said.

The women then talked about not feeling safe, disagreeing respectfully with others and the need for leaders to denounce harsh rhetoric or actions.

McCain said President Donald Trump should have denounced the bombs targeting Democrats and was informed by others on the panel that he did.

Joy Behar, one of the show’s cohosts, said that every time Trump makes comments like calling the press the enemy of the people, “his entire party needs to stand up against him and say something. Mitch McConnell, where is he? He is the leader of this party.”

“He’s getting harassed and heckled when he goes out in public to have dinner with his wife. So are we. Everyone at this table,” McCain replied.

Mitch McConnell, the Senate majority leader and a Kentucky Republican, has been shouted at in public places including restaurants in the past few months.
