Attempted ‘sting’ video of Sinema was a bust

A right-wing undercover sting operation on Kyrsten Sinema didn’t turn up any video evidence of the candidate secretly rocking a pink tutu.

Instead, the super sleuths over at Project Veritas caught Arizona’s Demoratic nominee for the Senate ... saying pretty much the same stuff she says publicly.

Here’s Sinema, “duped” into making this (not-so) shocking statement about undocumented immigrants:

“I believe we should offer citizenship to every person who’s in this country who isn’t bad,” Sinema told the undercover operator. “You know, if you haven’t committed a bad crime, you know, then you should get a path to citizenship. That’s what I believe.”

But Sinema is on record as supporting comprehensive immigration reform, including enhanced border security and offering undocumented immigrants a path to citizenship provided they learn English, pay a fine and pay back taxes.

The intrepid undercover operative evidently was hoping to trick Sinema into saying she secretly plans to grab all the guns if she makes it into the Senate.

Here’s the Veritas bait: “When I say ban guns in California, we’re all like, yeah, ban them, but you say ban guns out here?”

“They’ll actually shoot you,” Sinema replied.

Which is likely why Sinema has shown no support for HR 5087, a bill proposing a ban on assault weapons.

In the undercover video, Sinema’s district director, Michelle Davidson, tells the Veritas operative that Sinema “can’t be talking about an assaultweapons ban” if she wants to win. Instead, Davidson said, Sinema can talk about background checks, the gunshow loophole and making it harder for people convicted of domestic violence to get guns.

Several staffers and a donor talk on the undercover video about how Sinema is really a left winger posing as a centrist and one even appears to mock Sinema’s platform, saying “she’s going to vote for the interests of Arizonans. She’s going to stand up and protect Arizonan values. Whatever the f--k that means.”

I’d be more intrigued if the video clips weren’t so heavily edited.

And if the controversial comments came from the candidate rather than mostly low-level staffers.

And if left-wingers actually liked Sinema. They don’t — and haven’t for a long time.

They were furious, for example, when she was one of just 25 Democrats who voted against the Iran nuclear agreement struck by the Obama administration in 2015.

“This vote will certainly be a heavy factor in her future campaigns,”

Ilya Sheyman, executive director of MoveOn.org Political Action, said at the time. “Frankly, with this vote and the rest of Rep. Sinema’s record, it almost seems like Rep. Sinema is begging to be primaried — and we will be looking to see if a progressive challenger emerges.”

I doubt they liked it any better when she voted in September to make individual tax cuts permanent.

Now, Sinema is locked into a deadeven race against Martha McSally and Republicans are terrified that they’re about to lose a Senate seat.

Thus comes Project Veritas, with its undercover video “exposing the campaign’s belief that to win in Arizona, Sinema must appear more moderate than she really is, and hide her progressive views from voters in the process.”

Sinema, who has voted with Donald Trump 62 percent of the time.

Sinema, who has talked about this nation’s desperate need to make compromise cool again.

As gotcha videos go, Project Veritas came up with a big ol’ got nothing.
