Volunteer who helped citizen vote is just an absolute gem

-

A 90-something friend now living in a senior citizen home in Scottsdale did not get her mail-in ballot, as did the other residents.

Concerned, she telephoned the Maricopa County Recorder’s Office to ask that one be mailed to her. Despite subsequent calls, none arrived.

Descended from ancestors who fled Europe early this past century to escape persecution, she did not give up.

Early last week, she called the Arizona Democratic Party to explain her predicament.

The very next day, a volunteer arrived and drove her to a voting site in Phoenix. Because of her poor eyesight, the volunteer patiently read the entire form to her and explained all the options.

This, plus the return trip to Scottsdale, took several hours. No matter, the volunteer was delighted to be of service to a single voter.

How comforting to know that political parties in this state continue to enable all citizens to exercise their civil rights, unlike the situations in Kansas, North Dakota and Georgia where officials have turned virtual somersaults to block eligible voters by inventing bogus restrictions.

A history lesson is in store for letter writer who bent history

Gore Vidal used to call this The United States of Amnesia. He meant that we either didn’t know our history or we forgot it.

The other day The Republic published a letter from a Henry Richards, of Scottsdale, which proved Vidal’s point.

Mr. Richards listed several disasters that John F. Kennedy “brought” us. All were incorrect.

Which, I suppose, shows a certain level of consistency on Mr. Richards’ part. Kennedy did not get us into Vietnam. On the contrary, he planned to remove all advisers by 1965.

Johnson reversed this decision the day after Kennedy’s murder.

The Bay of Pigs was authorized by the Eisenhower administration, and run by the CIA.

The CIA was also behind the attempted Castro assassinations, after JFK and his brother ordered them to stop.

And the Cuban missile crisis was unwound by Kennedy, despite his generals’ desire to start a nuclear war with Russia.

In sports we call that 0 for 4. Certain people on the right can’t help but denigrate JFK, even after all these years ... while they heap praise on that traitor in the White House. Amnesia?

How about just plain foolish?

The governor’s answer is baffling, begs the question

I heard Gov. Doug Ducey on KTAR raido and something he said left me a little confused.

He was asked if he will raise taxes, and he said, “No, why would I raise taxes when we have a billion-dollar surplus?”

So my question is why did he initially only offer school teachers 3 percent? And why can’t you give the schools the proper funding they need?

I’m no ice cream salesman, but seems like you could spend some more of that on education.

What’s better than Election Day? That’s the day after Election Day

Vote for A, who’s honest, reliable, a hard worker ...

Vote for B, who’s trustworthy, qualified, believes in equal pay ...

DON’T vote for A, who is corrupt, against women, for the rich ...

DON’T vote for B, who is racist, antiimmigration, paid by lobbyists ... DON’T vote for A, who lied about B. DON’T vote for B, who lied about A. Love these fake commercials. Can’t wait until Wednesday.
