Top-ranked Kansas edges Michigan St. in season opener

No. 1 Kansas 92, No. 10 Michigan St. 87: Quentin Grimes scored 21 points in his college debut and Dedric Lawson added 20 points and 14 rebounds to lead Kansas past Michigan State in the season-opening Champions Classic in Indianapol­is.

The Jayhawks won their third straight in one of college basketball’s premier events.

No. 5 Virginia 73, Towson 42: Ty Jerome scored 20 points and De’Andre Hunter had 13 and 10 rebounds Tuesday night as host Virginia beat Towson.

No. 6 Tennessee 86, Lenoir-Rhyne 41: Jordan Bone scored 18 points and Kyle Alexander added 16 as host Tennessee opened the season with a victory over Lenoir-Rhyne.

No. 8 North Carolina 78, Wofford 67: Luke Maye had 24 points, Cameron Johnson provided a huge spark in the second half and North Carolina avenged an upset loss to Wofford last year with a victory to tip off the regular season in Spartanbur­g, S.C.

No. 9 Villanova 100, Morgan St. 77: Eric Paschall scored 26 points, Phil Booth had 17 and host Villanova opened its national championsh­ip defense with a win over Morgan State.

No. 16 Syracuse 66, Eastern Washington 34: Oshae Brissett had 20 points and eight rebounds, host Syracuse held Eastern Washington to 22 percent shooting, and the Orange overpowere­d the Eagles.

No. 22 Clemson 100, The Citadel 80: Marcquise Reed had 20 points and a career-high 13 rebounds as host Clemson beat The Citadel and reached 100 points for the first time in nine years.

No. 24 Purdue 90, Fairfield 57: Carsen Edwards scored 30 points and made seven 3-pointers as host Purdue opened its season with a victory over Fairfield.

Top 10 women

No. 4 Baylor 100, Nicholls St. 39: Kalani Brown scored the first four points for Baylor, which opened the season by scoring the first 24 points and had seven players in double figures.

No. 5 Louisville 102, Western Kentucky 80: Asia Durr scored 33 points to help Louisville beat Western Kentucky and get coach Jeff Walz his 300th career win.

No. 6 Mississipp­i St 88, SE Missouri 53: Teaira McCowan scored 24 points, grabbed 17 rebounds and blocked seven shots to lead Mississipp­i State over Southeast Missouri.
